    SAMSF-Locke Endowed Chair and Professor

Department of Pharmacology, University of South Alabama

The Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama is seeking a Chair of the Department of Pharmacology.  The successful candidate will be a nationally recognized scientist and academician who will recruit new faculty and set the direction of the department’s research and educational mission.  Numerous opportunities for collaboration and program development exist within the institution, including with the Center for Lung Biology, the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute, the Laboratory of Infectious Disease (including a BSL-3/ABSL-3 facility), the Center for Healthy Communities, and emerging centers of excellence that integrate clinical, translational, and basic research.  The College has recently developed a new strategic plan to guide growth of research and educational programs in advance of a new $200 million Whiddon College of Medicine building.  When completed in 2026, the building will feature 250,000 square feet of state-of-the art research and educational space.  It will house the four basic science departments, including Pharmacology, as well as clinical research laboratories.  In addition to research, the department faculty contribute significantly to the integrated medical curriculum and to the training of graduate students through the interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Basic Medical Sciences.  The successful candidate will possess a PhD or MD/PhD and credentials appropriate for the rank of tenured full professor.  The ideal candidate is an individual with a collaborative and adaptable leadership style who is committed to developing the academic careers of existing and new faculty members.
