Founded by escapees fleeing colonial era slavery, San Basilio de Palenque is the first free town in the Americas. Frozen in time, the town is recognized for its culture, language, gastronomy and the history of its emancipated people. Learn about the emancipation, the history of this African town in Colombia, local arts and crafts, the local dialect and way of life of the Palenqueros. Includes: transportation (~3 hr. RT), guides, traditional palenquero lunch, music & dance show and local candy tasting. This tour is operated in partnership with the local community & contributes to their maintaining a traditional lifestyle.

Join us for a morning dance class on the beach! Learn some basic steps for the bullerengue and gaita, while accompanied by a live band of traditional gaita flute, bongos and vocalists. Two left feet? No worries - just let the rhythm flow through you! Local refreshment included such as limonada de coco.
This tour focuses on Cartagena’s chequered and fascinating history. We'll head to the old city and enjoy a guided walk to historic sites including San Diego, Torre del Reloj, Paseo de los Dulces, San Pedro Claver, Museo de la Inquisición, Plaza Bolívar, Plaza Santo Domingo and Plaza Santa Teresa. After the walking tour, we will continue via bus to the Castillo San Felipe military fort, full of history from the Spanish colonial era with a large number of tunnels and hidden secrets. Then enjoy a panoramic view from Cerro de la Popa, a former convent perched atop the city, before returning to the hotel. Colombia has the second highest variety of avifauna in the world. The National Aviary located on Isla Barú is an extensive complex housing 1700 hundred examples of 700 different species across multiple maintained ecosystems. The National Aviary is a conservation-led organization that works to protect varied species including toucans of the Sierra Nevada, Condors of the high altitude páramo, and harpy eagles in the Colombian Amazon. Colombia is the second most biodiverse country on the planet, Jardín Botanico Guillermo Piñeres plays host to over 300 native plant species. On our way to dinner, we will make a brief stop to have cocktails as we watch the sun set over the ocean. Afterwards, we will head to the most traditional Colombian restaurant in Cartagena, Restaurant Candé. Dedicated to preserving not only the flavors of the Colombian Caribbean but the culture as well, the restaurant is housed in a lovingly rebuilt Spanish Colonial era building. Authentic Cartagenian dance shows during dinner bring another layer of culture to your dining experience!
